Green Heron (Butorides virescens)

Welcome to the Ocean City Green Heron (Butorides virescens) page, here we will document through photographs and videos the Green Heron (Butorides virescens) we have found around the Ocean City Maryland USA area…

What Are Green Herons

The Green Heron (Butorides virescens) is known for its greenish-black head cap and greenish back, its wings are greenish at the base turning to black and gray towards the tips.  It has a reddish chestnut colored chest with a white line down the middle, the underparts are a grayish color and it has short, yellow legs.

It is one of the smaller Herons with the adults having a body length of only about 17 inches, females being slightly smaller than the males, and not quite as colorful.

Fun Facts About The Green Heron

  • Green Herons are North American birds, they can be found year-round in the southern States and Mexico, migrating to, primarily, the eastern United States during breeding season
  • They are one of the few birds that know how to bait their prey, dropping insects or other items on top of water to lure them into striking distance
  • Females usually lay 3 – 5 eggs, and are incubated by both parents for the 19 to 21 days
  • The male Green Heron begins to build the nest, then proceeds to do a mating ‘display’ to attract a female, once mated, the female finishes building the nest while the male gathers materials
