What Are Arachnids?

Let’s start by looking at the Scientific Classifications or Taxonomy of Arachnids:

Kingdom: Animalia
Subkingdom: Bilateria
Infrakingdom: Protostomia
Superphylum: Ecdysozoa

How Many Species Of Arachnids Are There?

It is estimated that 98,000 arachnid species have been described, and that there may be up to 600,000 in total. In Maryland there are hundreds of species to be found, though the Orders are few, primarily being Araneae (true spiders), Opiliones (phalangids, harvestmen or daddy-long-legs) and Acari (mites and ticks).
