What are Amphibians?

There are three basic Amphibian Groups or Orders; Newts and Salamanders, Frogs and Toads, and Caecilians.

Digging a little deeper into Scientific Classifications or Taxonomy of Amphibians:

Kingdom : Animalia
Phylum : Chordata
Subphylum : Vertebrata
Superclass : Tetrapoda
Class : Amphibia

Amphibians are cold blooded animals that belong to the class Amphibia which comprises of three orders. Amphibians are considered the most important class in the vertebrates group. Since they are the first tetrapods (four-legged vertebrates), though unclear how this evolution occurred, this is an area of active research and debate among paleontologists. See Paleontology.

The amphibians can be divided into three main orders. Each having its own species. The orders are as follows:

Anura – Frogs and Toads
Caudata – Newts and Salamanders
Gymnophiona – Caecilians

Anura, the frogs and toads, have 6,509 known species, with approximately 20 species in the Maryland area.
Caudata, the newts and salamanders, have 675 known species, with approximately 21 species in the Maryland area.
Gymnophiona, the caecilians, have 204 known species, with no known species in the Maryland area.

Since 1985 the number of recognized Amphibian species has grown over 60%, at the same time the population of Amphibians has declined rapidly with nearly 1/3 of them threatened.
